The Northern Forest Ski Trail
A Rugged Backcountry Experience
At over 200 miles this trail is Maine's longest Nordic ski trail and is one of the most rugged and isolated ski trails in the nation. Starting at one of Maine's biggest ski areas and making its way north to Baxter State Park, this trail samples some of Maine's most rugged and untouched wildernesses. Existing mostly as an idea this trail has the potential to be one of the most challenging long trails in New England and in the United States.
Currently, the trail exists only as a concept and as a route between multiple layover points, or "huts". While most of the trail is groomed and open to skiers, there are portions of the trail on snowmobile trails which are typically friendly to skiers, but not necessarily maintained for skiers. Please give snowmobiles the right of way on these snowmobile trails.
The trail starts at the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center, from there it runs on the Maine Huts & Trails System to The Forks. From The Forks, it follows ME ITS 86 through Greenville to the Appalachian Mountain Club's 100 Mile Wilderness. From the 100 Mile Wilderness the trail once again follows portions of ME ITS 86 to Abol Bridge. The trail branches off into Baxter State Park form here. This section of trail is rugged and often ungroomed. The trail snakes through the park north until it reaches the north gate, Matagamon. At the moment this is where the trail ends (~202 miles). Eventually the trail may be extended on either end, but currently this is the extent of the trail. View our maps of the trail to find lodging and campsites.
